Vetran's day, and I'm all alone again. Everyone else, those that live nearby anyway, are home, enjoying the long weekend. But home is too far away, and too expensive to get to. Plus, I'm not a kid anymore, to get homesick, wet my bed, and cry for mommy. I've got work, I could be doing, but it just doesn't seem important. I've got friends, I could try to find, but the looking would just depress me. They'd be with their loves, in trysts or just sitting neath a tree, counting the leaves as they fall with kisses. And I? I just lay here, in my unmade bed, at noon, in my underwear, hoping for energy, hoping for a call, hoping for a miracle. knowing none will come. No need to shower today, it's just me. No need for food, or drink, I have my scotch and my chocolate. I really should, get dressed, go out, get real food. But there are sharks out there, they walk on two feet, and know when you're weak, they circle around you, like wolves, their eyes red with blood, which fills their loins with expectation. Circling, confusing, yelping, promising, and then, when you fall, they pounce. And it hurts, and you're wounded, and they cry with joy, another victory!! Another prize!!!! And then they take you, over and over and over again, until they're sated. And then they just walk away, untouched, save for maybe a speck of blood, that will be gone the next shower. And there you are, naked and bleeding, and all alone, again. Worse than when you started, with fewer places to go, because you know the others heard the howl, saw you, the prey, and know. Not all wars are fought on the battlefield, not all casualties are obvious, and not all vetrans are soldiers. (We're approaching the holiday season. So many people are vulnerable then. Can I ask each of you to watch out for one of them. I've lost too many friend to them to sit by idly this year.) | ||||||||||||||||
